Digital Models for Manufacturing Process Visualization

To improve the performance of current discrete event simulation technology as applied to manufacturing as well as supply chain, the integration of 3D visualization technology is a feasible and effective strategy. The use of Virtual Reality technology upgrades the present simulation package from simple 2D icons to realistic 3D worlds. It helps users to understand the simulation system more effectively and improves confidence while studying and analysing the simulation result. The integration also expands the application territory of Virtual Reality. A hierarchical modelling concept which transfers the level of detail techniques of Virtual Reality animations to discrete event simulations enables this integration realized in a low-cost PC based system. This paper describes the design and development of a supply chain virtual simulation system, in which various virtual reality objects and database techniques are implemented.
